Our Advisory Board

The purpose and scope of the Children’s Centre Advisory Board

To oversee and co-ordinate the activities in delivering services to families with children pre-birth to 5 years through the Sure Start Children’s Centre and to provide advice to the responsible school Governing body.

Key functions

  • Review the activity of the Children’s Centre
  • Review service provision including staff, financial and capital resources
  • Monitor progress against the annual plan for the Children’s Centre
  • Monitor progress against agreed targets (Children’s Centre performance indicators)
  • Advise the responsible Governing body on matters concerning the Children’s Centre

Governance and Structure

  • The group will report regularly to the Governing body of the school
  • The group will meet at least quarterly


  • Head/Manager of the Children’s Centre
  • Representative from the school Governing body
  • Representative of each appropriate school within the reach area
  • Representative of the staff team of the Children’s Centre
  • Health visitor or representative of the local Primary Care Trust
  • Midwife or representative of the local NHS Trust Services
  • Representative of the Local Authority early childhood services (i.e. early years advisor)
  • Representative of the local pre-school settings
  • Registered childminder or a representative of the local childminding group (i.e. Prospects)
  • Representative of appropriate local voluntary organisations or community groups
  • Representatives of parents/carers with children aged 0 to 4 years living or using services within the reach area of the Children's Centre
